Born in Missoula, Missouri, William Charles Bell (1911-1979) received his bachelor’s degree in 1934 and his master’s degree in 1936, both from Montana State University. In 1939, Bell earned his PhD in Geology from the University of Michigan. Specializing in Cambrian, Ordovician, and Pennsylvanian stratigraphy, he taught at the University of Texas (UT) at Austin from 1940 through 1941, before enlisting in the armed forces during World War II.
